The Engadine Valley

If you find yourself with a bit of spare time and you would like to explore the region, here are some suggested activities for you.

Good weather

Hiking alpine

Piz da l’Ova Cotschna (2,715m) is very close by. The hike up to this secondary summit of the bigger Piz Mezdi (opposite the St. Moritz Mountains) can be done within 2.5 h and doesn’t need any alpine equipment. The path is easy to find and well signposted. It starts in St. Moritz Bad and rewards you with beautiful views to the bigger lakes close by. Trecking shoes with a good grip are recommended. Link

Lej Suvretta (2,602m) The trail up to the small lake Suvretta starts directly in St. Moritz Suvretta and leads through the beautiful Suvretta Valley from which you continuously have the view to the Bernina Alps. The hike is not too steep (trekking shoes recommended) and you will need about 2.5 h to reach the lake. Link

Hiking moderate

Hahnensee, Lej dals chöds (2150m). The hike up to Hahnensee starts at the same point as the one to Ova Cotschna but it takes only about 1 h to reach this little mountain lake with a small restaurant where you can get drinks and snacks. Link

Strolling

• The Schellenursli Trail in St. Moritz leads from Salastrains to the Heidi hut and then on to St. Moritz Dorf. Salastrains you can reach with the cable car from St. Moritz. It relates to the famous childrens story of ‚Schellenursli’ using pictures and wood carvings, and takes around 45 minutes to cover. The scenery along the way is enchanting. You can also do it the reverse way and walk up starting in St. Moritz Dorf. Link

Gletscherweg Morteratsch After a nice 30 minutes trip with the rhaetian railway you get to the starting point of this interesting 50 minutes walk in the beautiful Bernina landscape. Several posts inform the visitors about the receding glacier. Link

Sils - Peninsula Chaste The light and the view over Lake Sils in the direction of Maloja are already inspiring at the beginning of the walk. You need about 1 h to make this round-tour at the shore of the peninsula with its hidden coves. Link

Cable Car rides

Muottas Muragl on top of Muottas Muragl you can enjoy the most wonderful view of the region. You can see how the Engadin Valley with its 5 lakes is embedded in the mountains and you will get the best impression about the place you’re staying for this few days. You can either stay, eat and drink something and enjoy the view or you can follow the ‚Philosophers trail‘ from 30 minutes up to 1 h. But be aware that on a sunny day it will be quite crowded. Link

Diavolezza For those who want to get an impression of the high-alpine landscape without any effort. On Diavolezza, you will be closer to the mountain landscape than anywhere else. Here, you can see the four-thousand- metre Piz Bernina and the impressive Piz Palü rise up before you and the Pers Glacier and Morteratsch Glacier beneath your feet. Link

Val Roseg go there by bike (moderate) or even horse carriage. It is a very romantic valley. But be aware that at this time of the year it might be a bit crowded. Link
